Ceremony
On the shortest day we brought the wildwood in,
festooned the frowning ancestors with ivy;
the mirror, the hall clock, the rows of books
with springy armfuls of ferocious holly.
We bound a knot of bay and rosemary
and yew and waxy moons of mistletoe
glowing between green sickle-blades. Lastly
we nailed a cypress-bough behind the door.
Through the dead centre of the longest night
the wildwood watched. We danced. The light returned.
